Max Verstappen, the three-time Formula 1 world champion, is expanding his brand beyond the racetrack. Known for his iconic radio catchphrase “simply lovely,” Verstappen has officially applied to trademark this phrase for a new clothing range. The European Union Intellectual Property Network confirmed the application made by Verstappen in May of this year, with the decision expected in November. 

Verstappen’s latest venture aims to reserve the use of “simply lovely” on clothing, footwear, and headgear. This move complements his existing line of apparel, which already features a logo bearing the phrase on his official website. The application not only covers clothing but also grants Verstappen the rights to use the catchphrase for advertising and other commercial purposes. 

Origin of “Simply Lovely” 

The phrase “simply lovely” first entered the Formula 1 lexicon during the 2017 Mexican Grand Prix. Verstappen, after overtaking Sebastian Vettel to take the lead on the first lap, exclaimed “Simply Lovely” over the team radio. His race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, responded with equal enthusiasm, cementing the phrase’s place in F1 history. Verstappen went on to win that race, marking his third career victory, while Lewis Hamilton secured his fourth world championship title despite the collision that left Vettel and Hamilton with damage. 

Verstappen’s Catchphrase and Rivalry with Norris 

Interestingly, Verstappen’s catchphrase has also been adopted by his rivals. Lando Norris used it to celebrate his win at Verstappen’s home race in Zandvoort earlier this year, telling his race engineer, “simply lovely, man,” after finishing 22 seconds ahead of Verstappen. While some speculated that Norris was taking a jab at Verstappen, he clarified that it was meant in good fun and not as a dig at his competitor. 

Since that memorable race in 2017, Verstappen has clinched 58 more Grand Prix victories. He often revisits the phrase during race radio communications, including after his victory in the United States Grand Prix sprint race last year, where he joyfully declared, “Simply, simply lovely, that.” However, Verstappen is currently experiencing an unusually long winless streak, with his last victory dating back to the Spanish Grand Prix nine rounds ago.
