In 1854, Abraham Gesner got the term “kerosene” trademarked for his newly invented combustible hydrocarbon liquid. It is derived from the Greek word “kerns” which means wax. Back then, the North American Gas Light Company and the Downer Company were the only ones allowed to use the term.
